Mark D. Williams
Mark Williams has represented employers in workers’ compensation and other employment related claims and litigation in the Traverse City area since 1988. He also specializes in insurance defense and insurance coverage litigation. Mr. Williams joined Conklin Benham’s Traverse City office as a shareholder in January 2003. He currently manages the Traverse City office and is a member of the firm’s Board of Directors.
Mr. Williams attended Albion College and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and Management in 1985. He continued his education at the Indiana University School of Law and received a JD, cum laude, in 1987. After completing his legal education, Mr. Williams served as an Assistant Instructor of Appellate Advocacy at Indiana University School of Law in the spring of 1988.
Mr. Williams has successfully represented his clients in the state and federal courts, including the Michigan Supreme Court, Michigan Court of Appeals, and the Michigan Compensation Appellate Commission. Mr. Williams also serves as a Special Assistant Attorney General representing the State of Michigan and its third party administrator in proceedings initiated under the Workers’ Disability Compensation Act. Mr. Williams serves as a case evaluator in circuit and district courts for personal injury and general civil litigation cases. Mr. Williams is also certified as a mediator having completed 40 hours of training at the Dispute Resolution Center of Ann Arbor. Mr. Williams also has experience representing employers before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Michigan Department of Civil Rights, Unemployment Agency, Wage and Hour Division, and MIOSHA. He frequently speaks to insurance and business groups regarding defense of workers= compensation, employment, and liability claims including the Michigan Society of Human Resource Management and the Michigan Self Insurers Association.
Mr. Williams is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and its Labor and Employment and Workers’ Compensation sections. Mr. Williams has served his community in numerous capacities. He is a former board member of Junior Achievement of Northern Michigan and served on the board of directors of the Cherryland Humane Society from 1993-2012. Mr. Williams also previously served as a founding board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Traverse City. Mr. Williams was appointed by the Mayor of Traverse City to be a member of the City of Traverse City’s Human Rights Commission on which he served for six years, including one year as its chairperson.
